Sports Massage with Aerial Osteopath
Throughout my practice as an osteopath I have always used soft tissue and massage techniques within my treatments. As a competitive pole and aerial performer and as an instructor I have regular sports massage treatments to relieve the overuse aches I get in my shoulders. I know how beneficial it can be so I decided complete specific training in sports massage in order to be able to offer it as a standalone treatment option to my patents.
About Sports Massage Therapy
Sports massage involves the skilled manipulation of the body’s soft tissues for relief and treatment of muscle soreness and pain, the maintenance of muscle balance and improved flexibility and enhanced rehabilitation from injury. It is of great benefit to any person who partakes in regular physical activity, this may be through work or hobbies/sports. Repetitive and strenuous physical activity and trauma can cause imbalances in soft tissues and sports massage is designed to assist in correcting these problems. The application of sports massage, prior to and after exercise, may enhance performance, aid recovery and prevent injury.
During a sports massage different types of massage strokes and stretches may be used depending upon what the therapist thinks you need following their assessment.
Sports massage is a therapeutic massage so it won’t always be relaxing during the massage, sometimes it may be uncomfortable while the therapist is doing the work. Typically areas that are sore will ease while the massage is happening but it can help to focus on your breathing during these times. Throughout the session the therapist will talk to you to check your level or comfort/discomfort and that it isn’t too uncomfortable for you. This allows them to vary their pressure as required.

If you have a specific soft tissue injury that is in need of massage then a more specific sports massage can be done. Typically this will involve work into the specific problem area and then work into the muscles surrounding this which may be compensating for the problem area. This type of massage can be done in either 30 or 60 minutes. In 60 minutes more of the surrounding muscles can be worked on than can be done in 30 minutes.
